BabaGabra Reviews: True Blue Cuisine

Writer's picture: Roy CheongRoy Cheong

Apa khabair, guys! Baba Gabra sini—ni ari, kita mo kai siau satu chut miah mia restaurant tau!

Today, we want to introduce you to a well-known restaurantTrue Blue Cuisine, located at 47/49 Armenian St, Singapore 179937, right beside the Peranakan Museum.

We rarely get to eat at such expensive restaurants, so we were feeling a little excited! The place looks just like a wealthy person's home—“bukan main lawa sekali!” The beautiful decor, antique furniture, and intricate details made us feel like we’d stepped into a time capsule.

We were lucky to be seated by the “chim-chay” (air well), where the natural light made everything feel so “chahaya terang” (bright and cheerful).

A Feast Fit for a Baba Nyonya!

When the food arrived, “wah!” We couldn’t believe our eyes—there were so many dishes spread out on the tok bulat (round table)! Our mouths were “ayer lioh sua meleleh” (watering) just looking at the spread!

We tried a bit of everything:

  • Chap Chye: The mixed vegetable stew was hearty and full of flavor.

  • Telor Chinchalok: This fried egg with fermented shrimp paste brought back memories of my Mama (grandmother). The egg was “ringan macham kapair” (light like cotton) and super crispy!

  • Bakwan Kepiting: The crab and pork meatballs were “seronoh” (well-made), each rolled into a perfect, round ball.

  • Ikan Asam Pedair: The fish was so fresh, and the asam gravy had just the right balance of sourness and spiciness.

  • Ayam Buah Keluak: The chicken was tender, but we wished there was a bit more kuah (gravy) to make it even better.

  • Beef Rendang: The beef was “masak sampay empok-empok” (cooked until super tender), with a rich, aromatic gravy that was just perfect with rice.

Durian Heaven!

For desserts, we were blown away by the durian pengat and durian chendol. The auntie at True Blue Cuisine told us they get their durian from the same supplier every year. No wonder the fruit was so wangi sama lemak sekali!

The Sagu Mangga (mango sago) and Lemo Bali (pomelo) were also amazing—not too sweet, which made them super “segair diri” (refreshing), especially on a “chuacha terek panair” (hot and humid day).

Nick loved the durian chendol so much—he polished off three bowls and couldn’t stop!

A Hidden Peranakan Treasure

After eating, we explored a special room at the front of the restaurant filled with “kreja tangan embok-embok dulu kala” (traditional Nyonya handicrafts from the old days).

We’d never seen so many kasot manek (beaded shoes) in one room! It felt like stepping into a museum, with traditional items and cultural treasures everywhere.

Why You Should Visit

True Blue Cuisine is the place to visit, if you're looking to enjoy delicious Peranakan food while admiring beautiful traditional crafts, or to Reminisce about old times. The combination of authentic flavors, rich history, and welcoming ambiance makes it truly special.
