BabaGabra Reviews: Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen(Halal Certified)

Writer: Baba GabraBaba Gabra

Apa kabair, suma! Baba Gabra here—today, we’re at Old Bibik’s Peranakan Kitchen, located in Joo Chiat. This little gem has an old-school, family-owned vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. What makes it even more special is the selection of dishes that aren’t commonly found at other Peranakan restaurants. We were really excited to try them out, and trust us, it didn’t disappoint! 🌸

The Food We Tried: A Nostalgic Feast

We went all out and ordered some of their specialties, and each dish brought its own charm. Let’s walk you through it:

  1. Ayam Pongteh: A classic, hearty dish! While some people might prefer the Babi Pongteh (the pork version), we decided to try the chicken version. "Daging ayam ni empok sama sedap," and the gravy was full of flavor—comforting and rich, just the way we like it.

  2. Chinchalok Egg: One of our personal favorites! The crispy texture of the egg paired with the savory tang of chinchalok (fermented shrimp sauce) made this dish absolutely irresistible. We couldn’t stop eating it—it’s “sedap gila babi sair!!!"

  3. Bakwan Kepiting (Kepiting Soup)This soup is such a treat. Made with chicken and crab meatballs in a light yet flavorful chicken and vegetable broth, it was warm, comforting, and absolutely delicious. Perfect for those who love soupy dishes.

  4. Jiuhu Cha: This was a real surprise! Jiuhu Cha (a shredded cuttlefish and vegetable stir-fry) is such a rare dish—we’ve only ever had it at home, usually during Chinese New Year. It reminded us of popiah filling, which made it feel even more nostalgic. We were so impressed that they included this on the menu—it’s not something you see every day. "Memang rasa macham laok embok embok.”

The Atmosphere: Homey and Warm

The restaurant had subtle, thoughtful Peranakan decor that added to the charm without being over the top. From the delicate tiles to the cozy furniture, it really felt like stepping into a family kitchen. It’s the perfect place for a casual, comforting meal that reminds you of home-cooked goodness.

Why You Should Check It Out

If you’re looking for a family-style restaurant with authentic Peranakan food that feels like it’s made with love, Old Bibik’s Peranakan Kitchen is a fantastic choice. Plus, they’ve got a reward system for regular customers—so it’s worth becoming a frequent diner if you’re in the area!

Final Thoughts

Old Bibik’s is a great spot to enjoy unique dishes you don’t often see at other Peranakan restaurants. From the rare Jiuhu Cha to the crispy Chinchalok Egg and tender Ayam Pongteh, everything felt like a comforting hug from the past. Whether you’re craving something nostalgic or introducing someone to Nyonya food, this place is definitely worth a visit.
